DIVERSITY & EQUITY

42 Degrees celebrates the diversity of artists, art forms and the experiences elicited. We are passionate about developing a community where people feel comfortable to express themselves, share ideas and learn from one another. We are working to incorporate fair opportunities and accessibility in all aspects of our festival, through the artists performing, audience attending, organisations we work with and committee selected. We recognise that creating a truly inclusive culture is a journey, but one we are committed to.

How we aim to work towards this in 2022:

  • We have a dedicated Arts Engagement Officer tasked with widening the range of community organisations we collaborate with, that also work to ensure fair opportunities within the arts. Through these connections, we aim to diversify our community by raising awareness about 42 Degrees, ensuring festival performance slots, talks and workshops are allocated to individuals from these organisations.
  • We pledge to increase accessibility within these communities, through offering free/ subsidised tickets and accessible transport options. The festival site has also been designed to meet the needs of all abilities, including suitable infrastructure in place to accommodate all physical abilities
  • Ensuring all artists are paid fairly, within the limits of our budget
  • Ensuring all published information is accessible for all abilities
  • Educating ourselves on current barriers to the arts and how they can be reduced
  • Creating a resource bank on advice for accessing opportunities within the arts
  • Creating a resource bank with links to information highlighting the current problem and how it can be improved

How we aim to work towards this, looking to the future:

  • We are passionate to ensure equity with opportunities for leadership roles within the arts. Alongside our Art Engagement Officer’s outreach work, we plan on running a marketing campaign that targets these groups for the 2023 committee.
  • As a grassroots, not-for-profit organisation, our committee positions are currently voluntary. In future years these positions will be paid.
  • Appoint a paid trustee board, with representatives from our target groups, who will help guide the development of 42 Degrees in a progressive direction.
